{"id":178,"date":"2008-08-13T09:36:15","date_gmt":"2008-08-12T21:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltics.co.nz\/blog\/?p=178"},"modified":"2008-08-13T09:36:15","modified_gmt":"2008-08-12T21:36:15","slug":"tiburon-whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltics.co.nz\/blog\/posts\/178\/","title":{"rendered":"Tibur\u00f3n &#8211; What&#8217;s In A Name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">[Estimated Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute]<\/span><\/span><p>Providing a little light relief after the rather heavy series of posts on multicast events, a colleague recently asked me what <strong><em>Tibur\u00f3n<\/em><\/strong> actually means.\u00a0 So I <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiburon,_CA\" target=\"_blank\">looked it up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being a town in California, it is also Spanish for shark.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know which derivation inspired the team at CodeGear, but it does raise the possibility that here in Aotearoa we could perhaps be referring to the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.codegear.com\/davidi\/2008\/08\/12\/38921\" target=\"_blank\">forthcoming release<\/a> of Delphi as <strong><em>Mang\u014d<\/em><\/strong>, as this is the Maori for &#8220;shark&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Some additional trivia &#8211; from the little that I have picked up of the Maori language, &#8220;nui&#8221; in a name implies &#8220;big&#8221; or &#8220;large&#8221;, so the place name <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teara.govt.nz\/Places\/Northland\/NorthlandPlaces\/3\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Mangonui<\/a> (which crops up in a few places here) means &#8220;big shark&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">[Estimated Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute]<\/span><\/span>Providing a little light relief after the rather heavy series of posts on multicast events, a colleague recently asked me what Tibur\u00f3n actually means.\u00a0 So I looked it up.
