{"id":199,"date":"2008-08-18T12:43:16","date_gmt":"2008-08-18T00:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltics.co.nz\/blog\/?page_id=199"},"modified":"2008-08-18T12:43:16","modified_gmt":"2008-08-18T00:43:16","slug":"about-deltics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.deltics.co.nz\/blog\/about-deltics\/","title":{"rendered":"About Deltics"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">[Estimated Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\">&lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes]<\/span><\/span><p>A lot of people ask me where the name Deltics comes from, or what it means.\u00a0 It looks like it might be connected to Delphi, but it isn&#8217;t (although that seeming affinity <em>is<\/em> one of the reasons I chose it).<\/p>\n<p>The original inspiration comes from an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deltics\" target=\"_blank\">early Chris Rea album<\/a> of the same name which has long been a personal favourite.<\/p>\n<p>The name of that album in turn stems from Chris Rea&#8217;s interest in railway locomotives, as &#8220;Deltics&#8221; became the name by which <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Rail_Class_55\" target=\"_blank\">certain diesel engined locomotives<\/a> were known.\u00a0 In fact, that name was itself derived from the <em>engine<\/em> in those locomotives.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napier_Deltic\" target=\"_blank\">Napier Deltic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Having recently arrived in New Zealand the Napier name immediately struck a chord, as this is also the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napier%2C_New_Zealand\" target=\"_blank\">name of a city here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I liked the name, noticed the fairly obvious similarity to &#8220;Delphi&#8221;, and in the absence of any better ideas decided to go with it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">[Estimated Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\">&lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes]<\/span><\/span> A lot of people ask me where the name Deltics comes from, or what it means.\u00a0 It looks like it might be connected to Delphi, but it isn&#8217;t (although that seeming affinity is one of the reasons I chose it).
